How my 19 years old dog daughter changed how I perceive animals, and how much I have learn about my self.
This photo of Lilly and I were made in a studio by my mom while visiting Sao Paulo, it was for my dog accessory line on amazon and facebook, in 2009.
I was 37 going on 38, and Lilly was 6 years old. It feels like we are aging together.
Being Lilly’s bestie all of this time, has taught me how people perceive animals. When I first brought Lilly home, some trought I purchased some and asked the price, but they were disappointed to find out that she was rescued with her mother by my cousin who is a vet. Lilly was in an old barn in the middle of nowhere in a serious hoarding condition.
Others were annoyed with my relationshiep with Lilly, and claimed that people “like me “ just wanted to have a dog like lilly as a fashion accessory. People who see little dogs as accessories exist. It is heartbreaking when they realized they get older and need extra care and decide to drop them in an animal shelter.
Elderly dogs have a high rate of surrender and they are the ones who die without a family.
Lilly and I have been making memories since ever . She has taught me so much, it has been an honor to give her all the extra care she needs. I am incredibly grateful to have found out about a plant-based lifestyle for dogs in 2013, she became more youthful, and she was rarely sick.
Lilly is almost 19, but I have the same excitement to take her out to be with her, and making sure to assisit her when she feels pain or can't see so well.
I strongly feel that there should be a school where humans would be trained in how to perceive animals at home and others that are exploited.
We definable need to change how we perceive all animals.
